  	Earl's obituary tells about a gap from 1920 to 1941 of operating a ferry, but Discovering Chandler Lines tells that he owned a ferry for 50 years on the Columbia River including having a ferry at the town site below the dam when the Grand Coulee Dam was being built. Grand Coulee was built between the years 1933 and 1942. From Discovering Chandler Lines: Although the Columbia River is wide and treacherous, flowing fast with many rapids then, and he really had just "fooled around the quiet, tiny, Alsea River a bit," he was a natural sailor and pilot from the start. WWI Draft Registration in 1917 shows that he was a farmer and ferryman. The birth certificate for his daughter, Doris, in 1919 shows his occupation as ferryman.

  	From Discovering Chandler Lines: He built his own 65-foot boat in 1948, the year the flood came down Pine Canyon. He was a master with the adze, shaping the keel beams. He had ferried everything from herds of horses, and sheep, cars from Model T's on, trucks of goods, manure, apple and peach shook, sawdust, to semi-trucks loaded with packed apples, pears. One of the latter nearly sank it once, trying to pick up speed too soon while he was still on the apron of the boat.
