- The Bethany Lutheran Membership Register shows that the John J. Berg Family arrived in Pope County from Ishpeming, Michigan in 1876.
The Berg family is found on the 1880 and 1900 census in Walden Township, Pope County, Minnesota.
The 1895 Minnesota State census shows that John had lived in Walden Township for 18 years and 1 month, since May 1877. Anna, John, Anna, August, and Johanna had lived there for 18 years. Apparently John came a month before the rest of the family. The rest of the children were all born in Minn and had lived there all of their lives. There was also a Gustaf Johnson living with them who had lived in Minnesota for 13 years but had only just come to live with the Berg family.
The 1900 census shows that he owned the farm, free from mortgage.
The 1905 Minnesota State census, taken in June 1905, shows that John had lived in Walden Township for 29 years and 2 months, since Apr 1876. Anna, John E., and Axel had lived in Walden for 29 years and 1 month, since May 1876. The rest of the children were born in Minnesota and had lived there all their lives.
The 1910 census shows that they lived on a farm they owned free from mortgage.
When John J. Berg crossed the border into Canada at Emerson on a trip with his son, Axel, on 11 Jul 1913, it showed his residence as Starbuck, Minnesota.
From Lashway book:
They lived in Ishpeming, Michigan until 1876 when they moved to Walden Township in Pope County, sec. 24, near the present town of Starbuck, Minnesota, where Mr. Berg had earlier filed a homestead claim. In 1875 he visited the site and built a house and barn and had some good hearted neighbors break up a few acres which he seeded in the spring of 1876. The grasshoppers took his crop. He stuck it out and broke more land after they moved in. The following year he seeded some wheat and oats and got a very good crop. The father of Ole, Iver and Andrew Barsness thrashed his first grain crop. The next year, together with John Bloom and Fredrick Chalenburg, they got a used horse-power thrasher and they thrashed together a few years. John Berg later bought a horse-power thrasher in company with Fred Fredrickson, Brent Wold and Otteson and they thrashed some years together.
